Posted on in Business News , Cycles News , Outdoor News

National Fitness Day is an event organised every year on the 25th September by not-for-profit health body ukactive. The aims of the day involves highlighting the crucial role that physical activity plays across the UK and helping to raise awareness of its importance in helping us lead healthier and active lifestyles.

According to a study undertaken by the World Health Organisation last year the UK is ranked 123rd out of 168 nations for physical inactivity. The average UK adult spends more than twice as long making tea as they do exercising, according to new research commissioned by ukactive.

"Brits spend twice as long making tea per week as exercising"- ukactive

Physical inactivity has been listed as a leading cause of preventable diseases and conditions such as type-2 diabetes, some cancers and osteoporosis. Being more active is not only proven to improve our physical health, it also has an incredible effect on our mental health, our confidence and development, our social connections and our communities.

National Fitness Day sees thousands of events taking place across the UK, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds and encouraging them to try new activities! Activities can involve "plank offs", yoga and pilates classes, treadmill challenges, high-street HIIT classes, dance-offs, mass walks and many more. The website even includes an Activity Finder which enables you to type your post code in and take part in events near you!

A number of ways that you can prepare for next year's National Fitness Day include running or hosting an event in celebration, encouraging your local schools to get involved, spreading the word to your workplace and getting active and joining in! Share your progress on social media platforms with #NationalFitnessDay and inspire others around you to take part!
