Cycling teams for Rio 2016 announced

Posted on in Cycles News

The British Olympic Association (BOA) has named 27 cyclists across the road, track, BMX and mountain bike disciplines who will compete for Team GB in Rio.

Seven-time Olympic medallist Sir Bradley Wiggins returns to the track after claiming time trial gold at London 2012 and he will be joined by former world champion and 26-time Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish - who returns to the Olympic boards after competing at Beijing 2008. The team also includes London 2012 gold medallists Laura Trott, Joanna Rowsell Shand, Jason Kenny, Ed Clancy, Phillip Hindes and Steven Burke as well as several newcomers. Paralympic multi gold medallists Dame Sarah Storey and Jody Cundy are amongst a 15-strong Para-Cycling team announced in June by the British Paralympic Association (BPA).

British Cycling programmes director, Andy Harrison, said: "I am pleased to announce such a strong squad of riders who will represent Team GB in Rio this summer. Our team has proven to be the leading nation for cycling in the past two Olympic cycles and our aim is to continue that momentum and be a sports team that Britain can be proud of. We've seen some good results across the disciplines this season and I've every confidence we can step it up once more for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games."

Chief executive, Ian Drake, added: "With Rio 2016 just weeks away, we're now focusing on getting behind all of our athletes, coaches and support staff for what is set to be a fantastic Olympic and Paralympic Games. Of course, the success of our GB riders is not only down to those who work with them every day, it is also thanks to the programmes and structures that we've had in place for many years which have helped them on their journey to competing on a world stage. A massive 70% of our GB riders came through our Go-Ride programme and will have ridden at countless domestic races and national championships on their way, as well as enjoying support from our army of dedicated volunteers. Each and every person working in the sport can take pride in the performances of our riders in Rio and we can't wait to cheer on the team this summer."
