Met Police seize more than 2,500 illegal e-bikes as E-Bike Positive helps riders buy with confidence
Posted on in Cycles News , Outdoor News
The Metropolitan Police have seized more than 2,500 illegal electric bikes and e-scooters so far this year – already exceeding the total number seized during the whole of 2025.
Using new roadside testing technology, including 'rolling roads', officers are identifying illegally modified e-bikes more quickly than ever as part of an ongoing crackdown on dangerous and non-compliant vehicles linked to crime and anti-social behaviour.
The latest figures demonstrate the growing focus on removing illegal e-bikes from UK streets. As enforcement activity increases, many riders whose bikes have been seized – along with consumers looking to purchase an e-bike for the first time – will be searching for a safe, legal replacement from a retailer they can trust.
That's exactly why the E-Bike Positive Trust Mark was developed by the Association of Cycle Traders (ACT) and the Bicycle Association.
Helping consumers buy with confidence
E-Bike Positive was created to help consumers identify retailers and brands committed to selling and servicing only safe, road-legal e-bikes in accordance with manufacturer guidance.
Research commissioned at the launch of the initiative found that 84% of Britons cannot confidently distinguish a legal e-bike from an illegally modified one, highlighting the need for trusted advice and responsible retailers.
By choosing an approved E-Bike Positive retailer, customers can be confident they are buying compliant products and receiving expert guidance from businesses committed to best practice.
A positive step for the cycle industry
Recent police action demonstrates the importance of tackling illegal and modified e-bikes, particularly where they are being used to facilitate crime or pose a danger to other road users.
At the same time, it's essential that consumers understand the difference between illegal modified bikes and the vast majority of legal, safe e-bikes sold by reputable cycle retailers.
E-Bike Positive has been developed to give riders confidence when purchasing an e-bike while recognising retailers who are committed to responsible retailing and supporting the long-term growth of the e-bike market.
Join the growing network
ACT is encouraging cycle retailers to become approved E-Bike Positive retailers and demonstrate their commitment to safe, legal and responsibly supplied e-bikes.
As more consumers look for trusted retailers, displaying the E-Bike Positive Trust Mark and being listed in the approved retailer directory provides a clear way to show your business meets the highest standards of responsible e-bike retailing.
