Government announces new Cycling Demonstration Towns

Ruth Kelly, Secretary of State for Transport, has announced the launch of 11 new Cycling Towns and Bristol as the first Cycling City outside London.  The aim is to get 2.5m more adults and children cycling regularly.

The new towns are:

  • Blackpool
  • Cambridge
  • Chester
  • Colchester
  • Leyton/Linslade
  • Shrewsbury
  • Southend
  • Southport
  • Stoke-on-Trent
  • Woking
  • York

In addition funding will continue for the existing 6 Towns, namely:

  • Darlington
  • Derby
  • Aylesbury
  • Lancaster
  • Brighton & Hove
  • Exeter

The total package of investment in cycling is now almost £200m for the next two and a half years; this includes a matched contribution of £50 m. by the Demonstration Towns themselves.
