E-bike sales hit milestones in Europe
Posted on in Cycles News
The latest reports to come out of Spain and the Netherlands reveal strong growth for the e-bike market.
E-bike category thrives in Spain
Spanish industry organization AMBE's annual market overview reports turn-over on retail level in bicycles and bicycle-related products surged by 8.62% in 2015 (vs 2014) to nearly €1.5 billion - with the e-bike category in particular showing the largest increase.
In Spain the two most important categories in the bicycle market, MTB and kids, which have a joint market share of more than 80% were both down in volumes in 2015. The MTB market slipped only slightly by 1.69% to 514,714 units compared with the previous year whilst kids bike sales decreased marginally, by 1.78% to 389.546.
But the most remarkable figures in the AMBE's market report was the 39.35% increase in sales volume of e-bike. Though the numbers might still seem to be marginal, such as its 2% share in volume, the e-bike already generates nearly €36 million or more than 7% of the turnover of Spain's bicycle retailers. Selling at an average price of €1,461, this increased by 12% in 2015.
E-bikes overtake pedal cycles in the Netherlands
According to Dutch trade org RAI and Bovag, 57% of sales, worth €514 million, registered through the tills as electric bike sales in 2015.
The average sale price of a new bike rose to €1,058 in 2015, largely down to high-ticket e-bike purchases. Numbers were further topped up by over 8,000 speed pedelecs registered, a 30% year-on-year increase for this niche category.
Back in July, industry giant the Accell Group placed electric bike sales at 43% of its turnover across all brands.
Coming on the same day that Bosch's CEO Volkmar Denner has said that "the car as we know it will soon be history", the rise in popularity of the electric bike has quickly appeared on the radar of transport planners, with pedal-assisted share schemes popping up around the globe with increasing regularity.
